VOLUNTEERING

For one of my classes I am required to volunteer for at least 10 hours this semester. Considering I used to work 10 hour days I knew it wouldn't take me long to complete my hours. But I also wanted to make sure I used this time to my advantage and get some experience directly in the field.

I decided to volunteer at Club Horizon. Club Horizon is a club house for the mentally ill and the deaf community. It's a place where they work side by side with staff helping to making lunch, file paperwork, and whatever project the club house has going on. The club helps teach their community how to function in society, and helps them become enrolled in school or in getting a job.

There is no way I would have only been able to spend 10 hours in this place and never come back. The first day I immediately fell in love with the people and the intentions of the clubhouse. Somedays I help prepare lunch and others I work with some members on the paper work that keeps track of the clubhouse's money.

What gets me most is that most members don't want anything but a conversation. They want someone to talk to, even if it's just about the weather.

If you ever get the chance to volunteer in any kind of human services field I highly recommend it. Helping someone less fortunate than me brings me so much joy and it really put things into perspective. It's also proven to me that I have found the right field of work to make me happy.
